Robert Wise started out at RKO, where he edited Orson Welles' Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons and then worked under Val Lewton on Curse of the Cat People and The Body Snatcher. He moved on to more mainstream work and is best known for directing the musicals West Side Story and The Sound of Music. His filmography is widely varied and includes such significant genre entries as The Haunting (1963), the film noir Born to Kill and the science fiction classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
