F.W. Murnau, born Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe, was among the most influential directors of the silent era. A number of his films have been lost, but several of those that remain are regarded as some of the era's greatest movies. Sunrise is considered by some to be the greatest of all the silent films. Murnau died of injuries suffered in a car accident en route to the premiere of Tabu.
