Cecil B. DeMille was a film pioneer who helped Hollywood to become the institution that it is today and defined the image of movies as spectacle. He was a household name and the first superstar director. DeMille was a founding member of the Motion Picture Academy. The Golden Globe award is officially named "The Cecil B. DeMille Award".

Called the "King of Hollywood," DeMille was most famous for his biblical epics. He influenced such classic directors as Ernst Lubitsch, G.W. Pabst and King Vidor. The famed shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is in part copied from DeMille.
