Buster Keaton was one of the best and most popular comic actors of the silent era. He grew up as a child star in vaudeville. His film career began in 1917. When he began to direct his own films, he created a string of innovative pictures that are now considered classics. He lost creative control over his productions at the end of the silent era and his talents were no longer put to good use, so he largely retired from the industry.
